1783 MONTGOLFIER'S SET OF UNIFACE DIE TRIAL CHAMP De MARS BRONZE MEDALS C-1735

Description

From my aviation collection I offer a pair of Montgolfier bronze medals of the 1783 flight of their air balloon titled Experience Du Champ De Mars 27 Aoust. This is a pair of what I think are die trials of both obverse and reverse of their medal. The medals are full size and die struck with a blank die for the reverse of the one being struck. So the pair side by side make a full medal so to speak. Not sure of the date struck, but before 1880 I am almost sure. I don't know the edge mark on mine, but to me it does not look like a cornucopia, which was used from 1880 till 1966, after which the date was also added. I will try to take a close up of the edge and add the scan to help you decide the date. I have had them some time and never knew why the uniface other than die trials or to be engraved on the other side for presentation? Don't know. A scarce pair of medals in perfect condition as saved.
