    STORY
    :
Totemic Conch shellfish (djulgu) .  The crosshatching
    represents the artist's country
Also on the back is another paper with very faded and worn, but partly readable, printing.  It appears to have the story, or cultural history, behind this work:  "... that in the dreamtime spirits took the forms of various animals and plant species that have come to be totemic of the different aboriginal clans and moieties. ... The color differences between totems is apparently not always important, but they are sacred colours ... with special symbolic significance."
With this history and background, this is a unique and special bark painting from Ramingining, Central Arnhemland, Australia.
