John Adams Commandery No. 355 was actually part of the Ancient and Illustrious Order Knights of Malta. This organization, although similar in appearance to the Masonic Knights Templar, was an independent organization with no connection to Freemasonry. It thrived, particularly in Pennsylvania and on the East Coast, from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. They wore similar uniforms to the Masonic Knights Templar, with feathered chapeaus, baldrics, belts, and swords. Many of these items appear so similar to the Knights Templar regalia, they are frequently mistaken for one another.
