The Atlanta Crackers fielded a Southern Association team on these grounds beginning in 1907.  The original wooden grandstands burned in 1923 and were rebuilt using concrete and steel.  From 1924-32 the park was renamed for club owner Tell J. Spiller, reverting to Ponce de Leon in 1933 and continuing until it was demolished in the mid-1960s after the National League's Braves relocated from Milwaukee and the new Atlanta Stadium was constructed.  Looking back, this one-of-a-kind circa-1930s snapshot shows a small portion of the slope beyond center field that became famous for a magnolia tree which over time grew quite large.  There was no wall fronting this portion of the outfield - only a beam.  A shopping center replaced the ballpark.  At last report, the magnolia was alive and well
