Order of Independent Americans, Pottstown, PA 1902 building
The General Assembly of Pennsylvania passed a law in 1913 mandating the reading of ten verses from the Bible each day in the public schools. The law passed after attempts failed in 1909 and 1911. The bills, however, elicted little debate in the educational or religious communities within Pennsylvania.
Major proponents of the Bible reading bills were six patriotic orders and one non-denominational religious group. The patriotic orders were the Order of United American Mechanics, the Junior Order United American Mechanics, the Daughters of Liberty, the Daughters of America, the
Order of Independent Americans
, and the Patriotic Order Sons of America. All originated from the nativism of the 1840's. The Junior Order United American Mechanics initiated the movement for compulsory Bible reading in the schools, but all six orders embraced the idea. The patriotic orders actively promoted the Bible reading bills and lobbied strongly for their passage. All also sent representatives to the Senate hearing on the 1913 bill.

THE WEIGHT OF THE MEDAL HAS WORN THROUGH THE RED WHITE BLUE LAYER IN SPOTS.
BOTTOM DESIGN IS BRAIDED METAL, APPEARS TO BE BRASS.
